Dr. Hess: From everything I hear, I need you on my team. I anxiously await your reply, and hope you will take seriously this offer. Call me anytime to discuss your future with the Future Focused Science Institute of the Americas.—LM

Terrible name, was Hess’ first thought. The Future Focused Science Institute of the Americas? What the hell did that even mean? (Not that “the Synt” was much better. But at least it was succinct.)

Poorly played, Claudia, was his second thought.

“Welcome to flight 5775, service to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. At this time, we’d like to invite any passengers needing assistance—wheelchairs, small children—to begin boarding the aircraft. Next, our first class passengers will be welcomed aboard,” chirped a bright, sunshine-y airline professional.

Hess pulled his smartphone from his pocket. He ran a quick search as he stood in line, not meeting the bright eyes of the airline attendant who scanned his boarding pass. When he was seated in his first class window seat, he called his mentor.

“It’s me. I’m about to go see the property. And I think I may have found our angel investor for the institute…. Yes, this one seems to have the interest and the capacity. I think you should reach out and call Lorraine Murray. M-U-R-R-A-Y. She’s in Los Angeles. All right, I have to go—we’re about to take off.”

His plane took off five seconds later. And almost as quickly, so did everything else. Hess is still gleefully grateful to Claudia Lee for being the inadvertent guarantor that the Synt never had a true peer institution. How could they, when his team poached her investors? They then set about looting and recruiting the scientists, too—all but stubborn Claudia, who refused to acknowledge that the stupidly-named Future Focused Institute was officially a thing of the past.

With the consolidation of money and talent, unwittingly facilitated by Claudia, the Synt outpaced everyone else in the race to the next evolutionary leap. In a world with a pace ever-accelerating, this institution would always be moving the fastest, without exception, without hesitation, and without apology.
